Styrsö 1903
Wargö Håla, close to Styrsö in the Gothenburg archipelago, was the traditional departure place of the Swedish East Indiamen. In 1903, after the great herring fishing époque, the small and woodless islands, well known from the Viking sagas, had found a new life as recreational resorts. A flourishing tourist business made huge hotels necessary, and profitable. The small fishermen's huts were huddling alongside the huge summer mansions of the wealthy Gothenburg merchants, still reclining on the wealth made from herring, Chinese silk and the tea trade of the 18th century."
